A Gastroenterologist is a physician with dedicated training and unique experience in the management of diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and liver.
What is Gastroenterology?
Gastroenterology is the study of the normal function and diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver. It involves a detailed understanding of the normal action (physiology) of the gastrointestinal organs including the movement of material through the stomach and intestine (motility), the digestion and absorption of nutrients into the body, removal of waste from the system, and the function of the liver as a digestive organ. It includes common and important conditions such as colon polyps and cancer, hepatitis, gastroesophageal reflux (heartburn), peptic ulcer disease, colitis, gallbladder and biliary tract disease, nutritional problems, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), and pancreatitis. In essence, all normal activity and disease of the digestive organs is part of the study of Gastroenterology.
Conway Huang, M.D.
Wellstone Health Partners welcomes Conway Huang, M.D., Ph.D., to our team. Dr. Huang is board certified in Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology. He earned degrees from the University of South China College of Medicine, the Huazhong University of Science and Technology and the University of Michigan. Dr. Huang completed his Gastroenterology fellowship training at Washington University. For the last five years he has also served as an assistant professor at the UTMB and the UT Southwestern Austin Programs.
Leslie Russell, RN, ACNP
Leslie Russell, RN, ACNP grew up in Indianapolis before relocating with her family to central Texas over 35 years ago. She earned a Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and graduated with an award for clinical excellence. She attended University of Texas at Arlington where she earned a Master’s of Science in Nursing and graduated with recognition in Sigma Theta Tau National Honor Society of Nursing. She is board certified as an adult acute care nurse practitioner. She served at Scott & White Memorial Hospital for 18 years and spent the last 8 years of practice in Gastroenterology. She is pleased to continue her service in the field of Gastroenterology providing care for those with a wide variety of GI problems with an additional focus on inflammatory bowel disease and nutrition disorders.
