What is Medical Nutrition Therapy?
Medical Nutrition Therapy is an individual appointment with a Wellstone Registered Dietitian to discuss nutritional concerns and receive an individualized meal plan for patients with diagnosis such as diabetes, heart disease, gastrointestinal disorders, hypertension and obesity.
What is a Registered Dietitian?
A Registered Dietitian has completed an undergraduate program in nutrition, a one year clinical intern-ship program and passed a national exam administered by the American Dietetic Association. Registered Dietitians must maintain their registration status through continuing education, advanced degrees and certifications. Registered Dietitians are recognized as medical professionals and considered the nutrition experts by health care facilities, medical practitioners and insurance companies.
What to Expect During an Appointment
Your dietitian will ask you about your goals and objectives and review your medical history, including any medications and supplements you take. Other factors such as lifestyle, stress level, energy level, exercise and meal patterns will be discussed as well. With that guidance, we can begin to discuss dietary prefer-ences and cooking habits and identify trouble spots; from there, we’ll develop meal planning ideas and pointers to help you start eating healthier.
How Much Will it Cost?
There is an out-of-pocket cost for a nutrition consultation which will be discussed when making your appointment with our scheduling coordinator. This may be reimbursed or covered by health insurance and it is worth contacting your insurance to inquire about the medical nutrition therapy benefits in your plan. Nutrition counseling can be a very cost-effective investment in your long-term health. If opti-mum nutrition enables you to lower your blood pressure and/or blood sugar or get your weight in check, it can potentially save you thousands of dollars in medications and future medical care down the road.
